Rapid detection of surges transformer magnetizing current during turn on

On October 24, 2017, the Youth Conference of the Academy of Electrotechnical Sciences of the Chuvash Republic took place in Cheboksary. The report “Quick recognition of a magnetizing current surge when turning on a transformer” was made by Kristina Vitalievna Lukina. The work performed by the young specialist of Relematika LLC was assessed by experts as relevant and of practical value. For carrying out research work at a high level, Kristina Lukina was awarded an honorable second place.

Abstract: Differential current protection of a transformer should turn off the turn fault as quickly as possible, distinguishing it from the magnetizing current inrush mode. The work develops an algorithm for quickly recognizing the mode of a turn short circuit and the inrush of a magnetizing current.

Gas protection and differential current protection are used as the main protection of the transformer. A significant disadvantage of the latter is the possible false operation in the magnetizing inrush current (IIC) mode due to the formation of a significant differential current caused by failure to take into account the magnetizing current when obtaining a DTS measurement, and the most unfavorable is the IIC when the transformer is turned on. In practice, current waveform blocking and second harmonic blocking are widely used as blocking mechanisms that prevent unwanted operation of the DTZ. These interlocks have their own response time, thereby slowing down the operating time of the DTZ.
